Former spokesperson for the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council, Kenneth Okonkwo, has announced his resignation from the party, citing leadership issues and a lack of preparedness for the 2027 general election.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Okonkwo expressed concerns over the internal crisis within the party, stating that the LP, as currently structured, is incapable of delivering good governance.
“My entrance into politics is for good governance, and I will continue to work toward ensuring that Nigeria becomes a great country of incorruptible men. This aim can no longer be realized within the Labour Party as presently constituted,” Okonkwo stated.
The Nollywood actor and politician also criticized LP National Chairman Julius Abure, accusing him of prioritizing personal interests over the party’s survival. He highlighted the party’s failure to organize a legally recognized national convention and the internal disputes that have hindered the effectiveness of the caretaker committee set up to salvage the party.
Okonkwo further noted that the LP leadership had failed to retain its elected members, as many have defected to other parties. He alleged that the party’s legal battles were being used as a strategy to prevent meaningful restructuring before the 2027 elections.
His resignation takes effect on February 25, 2025, marking the second anniversary of the 2023 presidential election. While he has not disclosed his next political move, Okonkwo stated that he remains committed to working with like-minded Nigerians to promote good governance.
