Lawyers representing Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), have submitted a comprehensive list of court judgements calling for his release to the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi.
Barrister Nnaemeka Ejiofor, leading Kanu’s legal team, presented these judgements to the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja on Thursday, emphasizing their basis from both domestic and international courts.
The submission follows recent remarks by Attorney General Fagbemi, who indicated he was not familiar with Kanu’s case and suggested that it should be adjudicated by the courts. Kanu’s legal team hopes this move will prompt compliance with judicial decisions directing Kanu’s release.
Ejiofor also urged President Bola Tinubu to honor these judgements and release Kanu, highlighting the inconsistency of the continued detention with the judicial directives.
Kanu has been in custody since his arrest in Kenya in June 2021, facing terrorism-related charges. His recent legal actions include a preliminary objection filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, challenging the court’s jurisdiction over his trial. The court, however, dismissed his requests for bail restoration and transfer from the Department of State Services (DSS) to house arrest or prison custody.
