The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has suspended three medical personnel at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre after a pair of surgical scissors was forgotten inside the body of Aishatu Umar, a mother of five, leading to her death on January 11, 2026.

Umar had gone for a medical procedure in September 2025, but after the operation she became uncomfortable and scans later revealed the surgical instrument inside her abdomen, sparking public outrage and demands for accountability.

In response, the board said a preliminary investigation confirmed the scissors were left behind during the procedure and announced the immediate suspension of the staff involved.

The matter has been referred to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee for further investigation and disciplinary action in line with professional and legal standards.

The board extended condolences to the family of the late Umar and assured the public that negligence would not be condoned in any form as calls grow for improved oversight and patient safety in public healthcare facilities.
