The Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council, led by the Sultan of Sokoto, has urged restraint and peace in Kano State amid the ongoing emirate tussle.

The council’s statement comes after the dissolution of five emirates and the reinstatement of Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi as Emir of Kano, which has led to tension in the state.

Governor Abba Yusuf had directed the deposed emirs to vacate official residences and hand over properties to the commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs. However, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, one of the dethroned emirs, returned to Kano and occupied a mini palace in Nassarawa, sparking concerns.

The council’s statement, released on Sunday, called for restraint from all parties involved, citing the need to maintain peace and stability in the state. “The Northern Traditional Ruling Council… calls for restraint on the part of the disputants in the interest of peace and stability, as the matter has reportedly gone to court and is therefore sub-judice,” the statement read.

The council’s appeal for calm comes as stakeholders, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, clerics, and civil society organizations, have urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the matter to prevent the situation from escalating further.

With Sanusi operating from the main palace and Bayero from the Nassarawa palace, concerns about the potential for violence and instability have grown. The police have vowed to respect court orders stopping Sanusi’s reinstatement, adding to the complexity of the situation.

The Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council’s call for restraint is seen as a crucial intervention in the ongoing emirate tussle, as the situation continues to unfold in Kano State.
