The Kano State Government has announced an indefinite postponement of the resumption date for all primary and secondary schools for the 2024/2025 academic session. The announcement was made by the Director of Public Enlightenment at the Kano State Ministry of Education, Balarabe Kiru, who cited “urgent reasons” for the decision, though specific details were not provided.
This move follows a similar decision by the Edo State Government, which also postponed the reopening of schools in response to rising petrol prices and the associated economic difficulties faced by parents and guardians.
Originally scheduled to resume on September 8 and 9, 2024, schools across Kano and Edo states will now remain closed until further notice. The Kano State Commissioner for Education, Umar Doguwa, is expected to announce a new resumption date soon.
The postponements come as schools in most other parts of Nigeria prepare to reopen for the new academic year on Monday, September 9. Both state governments have emphasized that the decision was made to ensure an improved learning environment for students.
