Democrat US presidential hopeful Kamala Harris has chosen Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her 2024 vice-presidential running mate, multiple sources confirmed to the Associated Press ahead of the formal announcement.
Walz, a former teacher and member of the US Army National Guard, brings a progressive record and union support to the ticket. Known for enacting ambitious Democratic policies in Minnesota, his accomplishments include tuition-free meals at state universities, enshrining abortion rights into law, banning conversion therapy, and protecting gender-affirming healthcare. He also signed the “Taylor Swift bill,” addressing ticket sales frustrations.
Harris, who initially considered nearly a dozen candidates, ultimately chose Walz for his experience and alignment with Democratic causes. Walz’s selection aims to strengthen Harris’s campaign in the critical Midwestern region, crucial for presidential politics.
Walz, who grew up in Nebraska, served 24 years in the Army National Guard and has been a strong advocate for Harris’s campaign against Trump and Vance. His support and progressive record make him a key asset to Harris’s bid for the presidency.
