Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has joined global voices in paying tribute to former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024.

Speaking exclusively to Channels Television at his home in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo praised Carter for his profound contributions to Nigeria, Africa, and the global community.

Obasanjo, who was Nigeria’s military Head of State during Carter’s first visit to the country in 1978, reflected on their shared friendship and described the late U.S. leader as an advocate for fairness and justice. He credited Carter for being instrumental in his own survival, emphasizing the personal and diplomatic impact of their relationship.

“Nigeria and Africa have lost a true friend, and the world has lost a champion of equity and democracy,” Obasanjo said.

Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, served from 1977 to 1981 and dedicated his post-presidency years to humanitarian efforts, including advocating for democracy and tackling global health crises. Known for his modest lifestyle, Carter lived in the rural Plains, Georgia, home he and his wife bought in 1961. He was married to his wife Rosalynn for 77 years, a union admired worldwide.

Obasanjo, who later served as Nigeria’s democratically elected President from 1999 to 2007, praised Carter’s legacy as a leader who prioritized integrity and global advocacy. His tribute echoes the sentiments of many who regard Carter as a beacon of hope and humility in international politics.
