Italy is taking steps to simplify the application process for temporary work visas in response to increasing labor market demands. According to TravelBiz, the Italian government plans to increase the number of designated “Click Days,” which are specific days when visa applications are accepted, making it easier for foreign workers to obtain necessary documentation.

The move aims to address the pressing need for skilled labor in Italy, as the existing visa system has struggled to fill critical gaps in the workforce. Maria Grazia Gabrielli, Secretary of the General Confederation of Italian Workers (Cgil), emphasized the shortcomings of the current “Click Day” system and called for reforms that better align with Italy’s actual labor needs.

However, the government has confirmed that it will not be altering the controversial Bossi-Fini Law, which governs immigration in Italy. This law requires non-EU nationals to secure a job offer before arriving in the country and enforces strict regulations for obtaining residence permits. Additionally, it empowers authorities to deport undocumented migrants and penalizes employers who hire them.

Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano indicated that the government is preparing to present a decree law outlining these proposed changes to the Council of Ministers soon. While the reforms aim to enhance access to the labor market for foreign workers, the fundamental provisions of the Bossi-Fini Law will remain unchanged.
