The Italian Bishops’ Conference has introduced new guidelines, approved by the Vatican, permitting young homosexual men to train as Catholic priests under specific conditions.

The 68-page document states that individuals with “deeply rooted homosexual tendencies” or those who “support the so-called gay culture” will not be admitted to seminaries or holy orders.

However, it acknowledges and respects individuals with homosexual tendencies, provided they demonstrate the ability to live a celibate life in accordance with Church doctrine.

The guidelines emphasize celibacy as a cornerstone for priesthood, describing it as “a gift to freely choose and live chastity.”

This move aligns with Pope Francis’ approach to LGBTQ Catholics, although he has maintained the Church’s traditional stance on same-sex acts.

Notably, in 2013, shortly after becoming Pope, Francis famously stated, “If someone is gay and is searching for the Lord and has goodwill, then who am I to judge him?”

Despite his inclusive tone, the Pope has previously expressed opposition to gay men entering seminaries. During a closed-door meeting with Italian bishops last year, he controversially criticized the presence of “frociaggine” (a derogatory term for homosexuality) in seminaries, sparking debate within the Catholic community.
