Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP) fighters killed three humanitarian workers and one soldier in Chettimari, Diffa Province, Niger Republic, on May 28, 2024. The victims, who worked with the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC), were ambushed by the terrorists, according to security analyst Zagazola Makama. The insurgents also seized the ICRC vehicle used by the workers.

This attack followed another ISWAP incident on May 29, 2024, in Tillaberi, where terrorists killed two soldiers and a civilian. The attack involved approximately 20 terrorists on motorcycles. Three attackers were killed, and authorities are continuing their search for the remaining insurgents.

These violent incidents highlight the ongoing instability in Niger’s Tillaberi region, part of the “three borders” area with Mali and Burkina Faso, which has been plagued by jihadist violence for years. Niger is currently under military rule following a coup in July, justified by the worsening security situation.
