Nigeria has spent an estimated N328 trillion on defence over the past 15 years amid ongoing insecurity challenges across the country.

The figure reflects cumulative government expenditure on military operations, security infrastructure and related interventions aimed at tackling insurgency, banditry and other forms of violent crime.

Despite the huge spending, insecurity has persisted in various parts of the country, raising concerns about the effectiveness of the funds deployed and the overall strategy for addressing security threats.

Recent budgets continue to prioritise defence, with trillions of naira allocated annually to the sector as authorities intensify efforts to combat insecurity.

Analysts say the trend underscores the scale of Nigeria’s security challenges while also highlighting the need for improved accountability, efficiency and reforms within the security architecture.
