Nollywood actress Ini Edo has lost a legal battle over the ownership rights of the popular Netflix series “Shanty Town” to filmmaker Chinenye Nworah.

The dispute, which began in January 2024, saw Ini Edo and her production company, Minini Empire Productions Limited (MEP), filing a double intellectual property petition against Nworah and her company, Giant Creative Media Limited (GCM).

Ini Edo sought to claim ownership of the trademarks and copyrights associated with “Shanty Town.” However, both the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) and the Nigerian Trademark Registry ruled against her, dismissing the petition as frivolous.

The NCC also upheld two copyright certificates issued to Nworah for the literary and audiovisual works related to “Shanty Town,” solidifying her legal ownership. Nworah’s lawyer, Olisa Agbakoba, emphasized the importance of protecting creative works and ensuring fair compensation for artists following the legal victory.
