The Independent National Electoral Commission has directed all Resident Electoral Commissioners to suspend publicity and preparations for the planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise following public backlash.

The commission had earlier announced that the exercise would commence as part of efforts to update the voter register ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Preparations had already been initiated, including the mobilisation of personnel and deployment of voter enrolment devices across various levels.

However, in a follow-up directive, INEC ordered an immediate halt to all related activities, instructing officials to step down all publicity and arrangements pending further instructions.

The commission also adjusted its scheduled meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners, shifting it to a virtual session while advising them to remain in their respective states.

INEC apologised for any inconvenience caused by the sudden change and assured stakeholders of its commitment to a smooth and credible electoral process.
