The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has addressed concerns regarding the tenure of Area Council Chairmen in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), clarifying that the current officials will serve a four-year term ending in June 2026.

This announcement follows inquiries from various stakeholders, including political parties and legal firms, regarding the election timetable.

In a meeting with the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Abuja, INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu emphasized that the tenure extension from three to four years was stipulated in the Electoral Act 2022.

He underscored that despite initial speculations under the previous Electoral Act 2010, the new law governs the current officeholders’ terms.

Yakubu further explained that the timeline for elections and inauguration aligns with legal provisions, ensuring continuity and adherence to judicial precedents.

He assured stakeholders of INEC’s commitment to upholding electoral integrity and urged aspiring candidates and political parties to abide by legal guidelines.

The meeting with IPAC aimed to clarify ongoing uncertainties and reinforce transparency in the electoral process ahead of future Area Council elections in the FCT.
