The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has launched an investigation into a viral video showing a female traveler tearing up a Nigerian passport at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.
In a statement issued on Monday, August 12, 2024, by the NIS Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Udo, the woman has been identified as Mrs. Favour Igiebor, holding passport number A11990869.
“The Comptroller General of Immigration has ordered Mrs. Favour Igiebor to be summoned for further investigation,” Udo confirmed. He explained that if the allegations are verified, her actions could constitute a violation of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended). The penalties for such an offense are detailed under Section 10(h) of the same Act.
Udo reiterated the NIS’s commitment to upholding the Immigration Act and emphasized the importance of preserving the dignity and integrity of the nation’s legal documents. “The Nigeria Immigration Service remains resolute in ensuring that the laws governing our national security are strictly enforced,” Udo added.
