In a decisive move to strengthen Nigeria’s border security, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nandap, has ordered the dismantling of all unauthorized checkpoints along the country’s border posts. Instead, she has directed routine patrols to prevent dangerous and unauthorized elements from entering the country.

The announcement was made on Friday, August 26, 2024 by the Service’s spokesperson, DCI Kenneth Udo, following a meeting between the CGIS and Comptrollers of Border Commands at the Service Headquarters in Abuja.

“The decision is aimed at ensuring efficient border security and migration management, which are core mandates of the Immigration Service,” stated DCI Kenneth Udo.

Nandap emphasized the importance of border security, noting that Nigeria’s current situation requires additional layers of protection to prevent criminal elements from infiltrating the country and potentially inciting crises.

The CGIS also instructed an immediate audit of manpower and logistics across border posts. “These reports are to be submitted weekly through approved administrative channels,” the statement added.

She further urged Comptrollers to employ supervisory strategies, ensure timely reporting of major movements at the borders, and handle sensitive intelligence with professionalism.

Nandap also highlighted the need for robust inter-agency collaboration to enhance intelligence sharing and bolster national security.

“The era of unauthorized checkpoints is over. Routine patrols will now be the norm to safeguard our borders effectively,” Nandap asserted. The CGIS reiterated the Service’s commitment to deploying e-solutions, improving officer training, and enhancing the welfare of field personnel.
