Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar has stated that he is unsure whether he will run for president in the 2027 general election.

Atiku, who has contested for the presidency six times, made this remark in an interview for an upcoming episode of Untold Stories with Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie. His statement comes just days after he announced the formation of a coalition of opposition leaders aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

When asked about his plans for the next election, Atiku responded, “I don’t know because there has to be, first of all, a viable platform, more than any other time in the political history of this country, particularly since the return of democracy.”

Although he did not explicitly declare his candidacy, the former VP emphasized Nigeria’s urgent need for experienced and credible leadership. He referenced the 2014 opposition merger that led to the APC’s victory, suggesting a similar coalition could be necessary to unseat the current government.

Speculation is growing that Atiku may throw his support behind former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi or former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai in the 2027 elections.
