Rhoda Gumus, the national commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) overseeing the Edo State gubernatorial election, has made a firm pledge to uphold integrity and resist any attempts at bribery. During her appearance on Channels TV’s “Politics Today,” Gumus emphasized her commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible election.
In her statement, she said, “I am in charge of Edo. I want to do the right thing, even though I will not be everywhere. We will conduct this election in a free, fair, and credible manner.”
She further reiterated her stance against corruption, declaring, “I cannot take bribes no matter how much. I don’t have to take billions to do what is right. Nobody will try me. They know everything about you in this country, and when they know you, they will not come near.”
Gumus explained that she has been constantly monitoring the electoral process, adding, “Since we started this process, every day I am on the platform with the EOCs (Electoral Officers-in-Charge). In five or two minutes’ intervals, I will enter the platform to know what is happening. If there is anything, I would correct it.”
Her remarks come at a critical time as INEC works to ensure a transparent and credible electoral process in the Edo State gubernatorial election.
