In a show of solidarity and respect, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has directed all officers within the Nigeria Police Force to wear black armbands for the next seven days. This symbolic gesture is a tribute to the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, who passed away recently, leaving a significant impact on Nigeria’s military structure.

The IGP expressed that this period of mourning serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by security personnel across the nation.

The black armband directive is a customary sign of grief, representing not only a mark of respect for General Lagbaja’s leadership and service but also reinforcing a shared bond between the police and military forces in honoring those who give their lives for Nigeria’s safety and stability.

By instituting this measure, Egbetokun aims to foster unity across Nigeria’s security sectors, acknowledging the dedication of all officers to a common mission of national defense.

He encouraged police personnel to extend their support to the family of the late general and all families who have lost loved ones in service to the country, underscoring the importance of compassion and unity during times of loss.

In the days following this directive, police officers nationwide will wear black armbands as they continue their duties, serving as a visible reminder of the commitment and unity among Nigeria’s security forces.

The Inspector-General also emphasized the importance of commemorating these sacrifices, recognizing that such gestures build morale and support among officers and their communities, especially during periods of national mourning.
