The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has engaged in talks with retired police officers protesting in Abuja over poor welfare and their continued inclusion in the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). The meeting is taking place at the Peacekeeping Hall of the Force Headquarters following demonstrations earlier in the day at the National Assembly and the police headquarters.
The retired officers, mostly elderly, braved rain to voice their demands for immediate removal from the CPS and better pension provisions, including a call for a minimum monthly salary for serving officers. Their protest garnered support from various activists advocating for improved police welfare.
Addressing the protesters, IGP Egbetokun acknowledged ongoing efforts to improve retired officers’ welfare but emphasized that exiting the CPS could not be immediately enacted. He urged protest leaders to avoid spreading false information, assuring them that the police force remains committed to its members.
Security personnel are maintaining order as discussions continue to find solutions to the retirees’ grievances.
