Popular British actor, filmmaker, and musician Idris Elba has expressed deep admiration for Lagos, describing it as the most amazing city in the world.

Speaking during the TIFF Tribute Awards, Elba reflected on his positive experiences while filming his latest directorial effort, “Dust to Dreams,” which is set in Lagos.

“Dust to Dreams” is a short film that centers on the vibrant but challenging life around a Lagos nightclub struggling to launch local musical talent.

The story follows Millicent, played by Nollywood star Nse Ikpe-Etim, the owner of a once-legendary nightclub trying to pass on her legacy to her introverted daughter Bisi, portrayed by former Nigerian Idol contestant Constance Olal.

The film features British-Nigerian music icon Seal playing Bisi’s estranged father, a soldier, who reunites with his daughter through music.

Elba highlighted the significance of filming on location in Lagos, appreciating the city’s energy, cultural richness, and the incredible talent of Nigerian artists.

One memorable moment for him was watching Seal perform in his native Nigerian accent, which added authenticity and emotional depth to the film.

The project is a collaboration between Idris Elba and Nigerian media mogul Mo Abudu, who served as executive producer, with backing from EbonyLife Films and African Export-Import Bank’s Creative Africa Nexus.

Elba’s vision through this film is to highlight African storytelling, bridging the gap between African creatives and the global entertainment market.

Beyond the film, Elba has ambitions to build dedicated film studios in Africa, with initial plans in Ghana, and calls on the African diaspora to support creative projects on the continent by filming and sharing stories locally.

This film premiere and Elba’s praise reinforce Lagos’s status as a cultural hub and showcase the rich artistic potential of Nigeria to the world.
