Swiss midfielder Silvan Wallner has announced his retirement from professional football at just 22 years old, citing his desire to focus on his Christian faith. The former FC Zurich player, who has also played for Wil and BW Linz, made his decision public through a statement released by Blau-Weiß Linz.
“I’m a devout Christian, and I read the Bible. I make my own decisions about my life,” Wallner explained. “I wish to follow Jesus Christ, and the biblical day of rest has become important to me. This means that I no longer want to play professionally on Saturdays.”
In his statement, Wallner emphasized that this decision reflects his personal convictions, even though he is not yet affiliated with any church. He extended his gratitude to everyone who has supported him throughout his sporting career, saying, “I say a big thank you to people who have accompanied and supported me in my sporting career.”
Wallner, who began his career in 2020 with FC Zurich, has accumulated over 100 appearances and was recently part of the Swiss U21 national team. His last appearance with the U21 squad was in September during a 1-2 loss to Albania.
