Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State, who turned 65, has expressed that he cannot celebrate his birthday due to the prevailing economic challenges in the country. Speaking on Sparkling FM Radio in Calabar, Otu stated, “I cannot in all sincerity celebrate my birthday with such expected fanfare in the midst of current hardships.”

He highlighted the impact of hyperinflation, adding, “There’s much suffering in the country due to current hyperinflation. It would be insensitive to do so. That’s why it is a low-key event.”

Despite the challenges, Otu expressed gratitude to the people of Cross River State for their prayers and well wishes, assuring them that his administration remains committed to improving their lives. “I have occupied many positions in this country. In all, I have never disappointed. So I vow that I shall not disappoint the people of Cross River State as their governor, by the grace of God. There’ll be value addition,” he stated.

Looking ahead, Otu disclosed plans to hold regular town hall meetings across the state’s three senatorial districts, starting next year. “It’ll enable the people to speak with me directly; ask me no-hold-barred questions, so that they will hear my responses directly,” the governor explained.
