Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has disclosed how he dismissed his daughter from his farm for arriving late, emphasizing the importance of discipline and leadership by example.
Speaking while hosting the new Chairman of the Board of Management of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, Dr. Dayo Israel, at his residence in the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library complex, Obasanjo recounted the incident as a lesson in accountability.
“Shortly after I left office as Head of State, my first daughter, who was then studying Veterinary Medicine at the University of Ibadan, joined my farm for practical experience. On her first day, she arrived at 7:15 a.m. instead of 7:00 a.m., and I warned her about punctuality. When she was late again the next day, I sent her back immediately,” Obasanjo said.
The former president noted that this decision sent a strong message to his employees about his zero-tolerance policy on lateness. “They said, ‘If Baba could do this to his daughter, who are we?’” he added.
Obasanjo advised Dr. Israel to be prepared for challenges in his new role and to “step on toes” when necessary to ensure effective leadership. He also commended the Medical Director, Prof. Adewale Musa-Olomu, for his achievements over the past seven and a half years.
Dr. Israel, in response, praised Obasanjo’s wisdom and leadership, vowing to support the hospital’s transformation into a world-class medical institution. He highlighted plans to transition FMC Abeokuta to renewable energy and enhance healthcare services through partnerships.
During his familiarization visits, Dr. Israel also met with royal fathers, including the Alake of Egbaland, Osile of Oke-Ona, and Olowu of Owu, who offered prayers for his successful tenure.
