The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported that the average cost of maintaining a healthy diet in Nigeria rose by 1.9% in July 2024, reaching N1,265 per adult per day. This increase follows a previous figure of N1,241 recorded in June 2024.

According to the NBS data, the cost of a healthy diet was significantly higher in the South West, at N1,581 per adult per day, compared to N956 per adult per day in the North West. The report noted, “This is a lower bound (or floor) of the cost per adult per day excluding the cost of transportation and meal preparation.”

The data also highlighted a trend of the cost of a healthy diet (CoHD) rising faster than both general inflation and food inflation rates. As of July 2024, Nigeria’s headline inflation and food inflation stood at 33.40% and 39.53%, respectively.
