U.S. Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has edged ahead of former President Donald Trump in a new poll in Iowa, a state that Trump previously won comfortably in both 2016 and 2020.

The Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll, released on Saturday, shows Harris with a narrow lead of 47% to Trump’s 44%, within the poll’s 3.4 percentage-point margin of error.

The poll, conducted from October 28-31 with 808 likely voters, reveals a significant shift in support among women, particularly older and politically independent voters. “The poll shows that women — particularly those who are older or who are politically independent — are driving the late shift toward Harris,” the Register reported.

Despite these numbers, the Trump campaign has dismissed the poll as an “outlier.” Citing an Emerson College Poll, also released Saturday, which indicates a starkly different outcome, Trump’s campaign noted the Emerson poll shows Trump leading Harris by 10 points. According to the Trump team, the Emerson poll “more closely reflects the state of the Iowa electorate.”

With election day fast approaching, Harris and Trump remain locked in a tight national race, with both campaigns focusing efforts on battleground states such as North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
