Guinea’s military junta, led by General Mamady Doumbouya, has imposed a ban on ministers traveling abroad without prior approval from the president. The new directive, effective immediately, also recalls all ministers currently outside the country. This decision, announced by the government’s general secretary on Thursday, aims to curb public spending and enhance governmental efficiency.
“On the instructions of the president, it is required of all ministers on mission abroad to finish up and return to national territory,” the statement read.
Government spokesperson Ousmane Gaoual Diallo confirmed that senior government officials and diplomats would still be permitted to represent Guinea abroad. He added that the travel restrictions would help optimize state resource management.
General Doumbouya, who seized power in a 2021 coup, had initially promised to return Guinea to civilian rule by the end of 2024. However, the junta has since acknowledged that it will not meet this deadline, and several officials have shown support for Doumbouya running in the next presidential election.
