The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that a new HIV prevention drug, described as groundbreaking in the fight against the virus, is expected to arrive in the country in March. Officials said the drug will be made available to help reduce the rate of new infections and strengthen existing prevention efforts, especially among high-risk groups.

The health ministry explained that the medication has been approved for use based on evidence from clinical studies showing its effectiveness in preventing HIV transmission when taken as prescribed. Authorities added that the rollout will be part of broader strategies to expand access to preventive health services, improve public awareness, and support ongoing national efforts to combat HIV/AIDS.

Government representatives said preparations are underway to ensure the drug’s smooth distribution once it arrives, including training healthcare workers and integrating it into existing public health programmes. They emphasised the importance of community engagement and education to encourage uptake and ensure that people understand how to use the medication safely and effectively.

Public health experts welcomed the announcement, saying the new prevention option could be a valuable addition to Nigeria’s response to HIV. They noted that combining pharmaceutical prevention with other interventions, such as testing, counselling and treatment, can significantly reduce new infections and improve health outcomes for individuals and communities.

The government said it will continue collaborating with international partners and health organisations to support the drug’s introduction and monitor its impact once it starts being deployed later in March.
