In a move to ensure peace and order in the state, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has directed heads of administration in the 23 local government areas to take over from the elected council chairmen whose three-year tenure elapsed on Monday.

In a state broadcast on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara cited the Constitution’s provision and the need for a smooth transition of power. He appreciated the efforts and dedication of the outgoing council chairmen to public service.

Two LGA chairmen, Dame Anengi Barasua Claude-Wilcox of Bonny Local Government Area and Enyiada Cookeygam of Opobo/Nkoro, have announced their willingness to leave office in line with the state’s Local Government Law of 2018. Both chairmen had challenged the tenure extension of local government chairmen in court.

Meanwhile, protesters barricaded the council premises in Akuku-Toru and Asari-Toru local government councils, demanding a handover by the chairmen. However, the chairmen, Rowland Sekibo and Onengiyeofori George, appealed for calm and peaceful resolution, citing the court’s involvement in the matter.

The dispute over the end of the LGA tenure has taken a new turn, with the chairmen urging supporters to exercise restraint and avoid violence. The matter is currently before the Court of Appeal, with a potential appeal to the Supreme Court.

Governor Fubara’s directive aims to maintain peace and order in the state, ensuring a smooth transition of power in the local government areas.
