General Abdourahamane Tchiani was officially sworn in on Wednesday as Niger’s transitional leader, set to govern the country for the next five years.
The inauguration ceremony, held in a major conference hall in Niamey, was attended by key political figures, including former President Mahamadou Issoufou. In addition to assuming office, Tchiani was also promoted to a five-star general, a move seen as further consolidating his hold on power.
The development has sparked mixed reactions among Nigeriens. While some support the transition, others argue that it contradicts earlier agreements for a shorter transition period.
As the country closely watches, many are eager to see how the transitional government will navigate national affairs and whether it will eventually pave the way for a civilian-led government.
