A gas leak fire razed a two-storey building at No. 21, Oduntan Street, Mushin, Lagos State, destroying property worth millions of naira. The fire, which broke out in the afternoon, engulfed the second floor of the building, which housed two 3-bedroom flats, and quickly spread from the front flat to the back flat.

The swift response of emergency teams, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and the Nigeria Police, helped to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to neighboring buildings.

According to Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, preliminary investigations by the agency’s Eagle Response Team revealed that the fire was triggered by a gas leakage from a cylinder in one of the flats on the second floor.

“There was no loss of life or injuries in the incident,” Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed. “The quick intervention of LASEMA’s Eagle Response Team, the LRU Fire Unit, and other responders curtailed the fire, while the Nigeria Police provided crowd control and secured the area.”

Residents of the affected building were left counting their losses as the fire destroyed furniture, appliances, and personal belongings. Eyewitnesses commended the emergency teams for their rapid response, which minimized the extent of the damage.

Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution when handling gas cylinders and other flammable materials to prevent similar incidents in the future.
