Gareth Southgate announced his resignation as England’s manager on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, two days after their loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

In a statement, Southgate said, “It’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.”

Southgate took over the role in 2016, a period when England’s football performance was struggling. Under his leadership, England reached three semi-finals and two finals in four tournaments. Prior to his tenure, England had only reached three major tournament semi-finals and one final in their history, winning the 1966 World Cup.

“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England,” said the 53-year-old. “It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all,” He said.
