The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has highlighted culture and religion as significant obstacles to women’s active participation in Nigerian politics. He made this statement while receiving the wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, and other prominent politicians’ wives at the APC national secretariat in Abuja.

Ganduje emphasized that despite women’s numerical strength and commitment to the electoral process, they are often marginalized when it comes to sharing the success of elections. He expressed the need to change this narrative and increase women’s participation in politics, starting from the grassroots level.

The APC chairman acknowledged that cultural and religious elements contribute to this challenge but expressed optimism that these barriers will eventually give way to full women’s participation in politics, leading to improved financial status for women.

Hajiya Nana Shettima, representing the wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, urged Nigerians to be patient with the government and appreciate one another’s efforts. She praised the President for being gender-friendly and providing opportunities for women in his government.

This meeting aimed to empower women within the party and promote gender inclusivity in politics. The discussion centered around addressing the cultural and religious barriers that hinder women’s participation and exploring strategies to increase their involvement in the political sphere.
