Former President Goodluck Jonathan has distanced himself from an Instagram post suggesting he plans to run for president in the 2027 election. The post, shared by an account bearing Jonathan’s name, criticized Nigeria’s current leadership for “pretending to sleep” and urged citizens to choose better leadership in 2027. It featured music and an AI-generated image of Jonathan shaking hands with former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Jonathan’s spokesperson, Ikechukwu Eze, clarified that the former president does not operate an Instagram account and dismissed the post as fake. This is not the first time Jonathan has had to disown political activity linked to his name; ahead of the 2023 elections, he rejected a presidential nomination form purchased on his behalf by a support group without his authorization.
The post has attracted significant attention online, but Jonathan’s media team has reiterated that he has no plans for a political comeback at this time.
