Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, the former Chairman of Nigeria’s defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC), has died at the age of 83. His passing was announced today.

The Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, expressed deep sorrow over his death, lamenting that Nwosu died largely unrecognized despite his significant contributions to Nigeria’s democracy.

Nwosu is remembered for overseeing what is widely regarded as Nigeria’s most peaceful and credible election—the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which was won by the late Moshood Abiola. However, the election results were controversially annulled, marking a turning point in Nigeria’s political history.

Nwosu’s legacy continues to resonate within Nigeria’s democratic journey, with recent calls from the House of Representatives to honor him by naming the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after him.
