YAOUNDÉ, Cameroon – Landry Nguemo, the 38-year-old former Cameroon international, has tragically died in a traffic accident, the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) confirmed on Thursday via their Facebook page.
“Fecafoot has just learned the news of the death of the former Indomitable Lion, Landry Nguemo, as a result of a traffic accident,” read the post. Nguemo, born in Yaoundé, played 42 times for the Cameroonian national team, scoring three goals between 2006 and 2014. He earned a runners-up medal at the 2008 African Cup of Nations.
Nguemo’s club career was primarily in France, where he joined AS Nancy-Lorraine’s academy at 16. He graduated to their first team, winning the French League Cup in 2006. He later played for Bordeaux from 2011 to 2014, winning the French Cup in 2013, and then moved to Saint-Étienne in 2014.
Tributes poured in from his former clubs. AS Nancy-Lorraine expressed “immense sadness” on X, formerly Twitter, while Bordeaux and Saint-Étienne also honored his memory. Nancy noted that Nguemo had returned to coach their Under-16 team, showing “the desire to pass on to the kids his knowledge and experience.”
His career also included stints in Turkey and Norway before his return to Nancy to begin his coaching journey. The football community mourns the loss of a player remembered for his contributions on the field and his dedication to nurturing young talent off the field.
