The Inspector General of Police (IGP), in Nigeria, Kayode Egbetokun, has disclosed that credible intelligence indicates foreign mercenaries are involved in the planned nationwide protest scheduled for August 1.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, July 26, 2024, the IGP urged all groups intending to participate in the demonstrations to submit their details to the Commissioners of Police in their respective states.
“We note those who have spoken out against any form of protest at this critical juncture, fearing enemies of our country may be manipulating the process,” Egbetokun stated. “We confirm their fears are genuine, as we have credible intelligence on foreign mercenaries’ involvement in this planned protest.”
The protest, dubbed ‘End Bad Governance in Nigeria,’ is set to take place across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory from August 1 to August 10. This has prompted calls from President Bola Tinubu, state governors, security agencies, and traditional rulers for youths to delay their plans and allow the government time to address their concerns.
During the briefing, the IGP commended “patriots who have withdrawn from the protest due to the apparent sinister motives and ignorance of those calling for violence.” He expressed concerns about the potential for the protest to be hijacked by criminal elements, explaining that the police need detailed information to identify possible troublemakers.
Egbetokun reiterated the police’s commitment to deploying adequate personnel and resources to ensure public safety. He stressed the importance of knowing specific routes and areas for the protest to avoid conflicts with other events or activities. He also outlined guidelines for protesters to follow, including establishing clear communication channels with protest leaders to address any concerns, minimizing the risk of violence or criminal activity, and cooperating with the police.
“We encourage all protesters to cooperate with the police, obey the law, and adhere to global best practices for peaceful assembly to guarantee a safe and successful exercise of their rights,” Egbetokun added.
