The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has revealed that the recent surge in terrorist activities in the Northeast is linked to the influx of foreign fighters, who are reinforcing local terrorist groups. During a press briefing, Maj. Gen. Buba Edward, the Director of Defence Media Operations, disclosed that these insurgents hail from the Sahelian region.

“The resurgence in terror attacks can be attributable to the influx of foreign fighters who came in as reinforcements for these terrorists. These foreign fighters are from the Sahelian region,” Buba stated. He also pointed to local collaborators who provide vital information on troop movements as another contributing factor to the increase in attacks.

Despite the challenges posed by these foreign insurgents and local support networks, Buba assured that the military remains committed to eradicating terrorism from Nigeria. He acknowledged that while tactical setbacks might occur, Nigerian troops are determined to fulfill their mission of eliminating insurgency and terrorism within the country.
