The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that recent flooding has impacted 29 states and 172 local government areas across Nigeria, affecting over 1,048,312 people, displacing 625,239, and resulting in 259 deaths nationwide.
NEMA Director General, Zubaida Umar, revealed these statistics during a meeting of the National Emergency Coordination Forum, aimed at reviewing disaster management strategies. She mentioned that while the severity of flooding in some areas, such as Borno State, has been exacerbated by specific incidents like the Alau Dam spillway breakage, the overall trend aligns with predictions in the Annual Flood Outlook by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency.
Efforts to provide relief and support to affected areas are ongoing, with interventions including search and rescue operations, distribution of essential supplies, and activation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.
The federal government, in collaboration with state governments and humanitarian partners, is committed to providing necessary support to mitigate the impact of the disaster.
