Nigerian separatist leader Simon Ekpa appeared before the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland on Friday, May 30, 2025, marking the start of his terrorism trial. Ekpa, a dual Finnish-Nigerian citizen and former municipal politician in Lahti, faces serious charges including public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent, participation in a terrorist group, and aggravated tax fraud.

Ekpa was arrested in November 2024 on suspicion of terror-related activities such as incitement to violence and terrorism financing. Finnish authorities accuse him of using social media platforms to incite violence and unrest in Nigeria’s Southeast region as part of his campaign for the independence of Biafra.

Prosecutors are demanding a six-year prison sentence, presenting extensive evidence of Ekpa’s online activities and communications. Despite the allegations, Ekpa has denied ordering weapons for pro-Biafra groups and other charges during interrogations.

The trial is expected to span several days and will be overseen by a panel of three judges. It has attracted international attention due to Ekpa’s role in the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) movement, which seeks independence for Nigeria’s southeastern states—a region historically marked by civil war.

Finnish authorities have emphasized their commitment to enforcing strict anti-terrorism laws while respecting legal rights. The case highlights Finland’s stance against individuals allegedly using its territory to coordinate or finance activities with global security implications.

Ekpa remains in custody as the trial proceeds, with further hearings and possible re-evaluations of his detention scheduled in the coming weeks.
