Finima youths in Rivers State’s Bonny Local Government Area on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, shut down Saipem Construction Nigeria Limited and Daewoo Engineering and Construction Limited, key contractors in the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) Train Seven Project.
The protest, driven by claims of neglect and marginalization, led to the barricading of company gates, effectively halting staff movement.
The youths braved heavy rain to demand the enforcement of the Local Content Development Act of 2017, which mandates the inclusion of host communities in significant projects. They allege that their community has been sidelined in the Train Seven Project, a major initiative aimed at boosting Nigeria’s gas production and economic growth.
In response, NLNG’s Acting General Manager of External Relations and Sustainable Development, Charles Epelle, clarified that the issue is between the workers and the contractors, not directly with NLNG. “Engagements to resolve the issue amicably are underway. NLNG prioritizes inclusiveness and calls for a peaceful resolution to the expressed grievances,” Epelle stated.
