The Federal Government of Nigeria has pledged to take firm action against any Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) officers found guilty in the bribery scandal involving crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky. The scandal emerged after a viral video alleged that Bobrisky served his six-month prison sentence outside a correctional facility by bribing officers.
During a media briefing in Abuja to mark his one-year anniversary in office, Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, assured the public that no one involved would be shielded. “Please, let us be patient for investigations to be done and be rest assured that nobody will be shielded and nobody will be protected,” the minister emphasized.
The minister refuted claims that the investigation is being targeted solely at Bobrisky, stating, “It is not just about Bobrisky.”
This statement follows allegations made by blogger Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, who claimed that some officers from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) accepted ₦15 million from Bobrisky to drop money laundering charges related to his naira-spraying incident. It was also alleged that Bobrisky paid a large sum to secure an apartment where he served his sentence.
In response to the growing controversy, the Federal Government has suspended senior officers of the NCoS to ensure a thorough investigation. Among those suspended are Michael Anugwa, Deputy Controller of Corrections at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos, and Sikiru Adekunle, Deputy Controller of Corrections at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri. The government promised that the findings of the investigation will be made public.
