The Federal Government has announced the removal of the 5% excise tax on telecommunications services, effective immediately.

This decision, ordered by President Bola Tinubu, aims to ease the financial burden on millions of Nigerians who rely on voice and data services.

The tax, introduced in 2022 under the Muhammadu Buhari administration, faced heavy criticism from industry stakeholders and consumer groups.

Over 171 million active telecom subscribers nationwide are expected to benefit from this policy reversal, especially after facing a 50% tariff hike earlier this year.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will work with stakeholders to ensure the benefits of the tax removal are passed on to consumers. This move is seen as a significant relief for Nigerians struggling with rising living costs.
