The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Labour Union have finalized an agreement on a new national minimum wage of ₦70,000, set to be implemented starting July 29, 2024.

This development was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by both parties on Friday, September 21, 2024.

The agreement also reinstates the previously discontinued wage award, which will now be paid up to July 28, 2024. The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), and signed by the Head of Information and Public Relations, Eno Olotu.

“The Trade Union and Government sides have agreed on consequential adjustments to salaries arising from the new minimum wage of ₦70,000,” said the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, who also chairs the committee on salaries for civil servants. She commended the committee members for their dedication and commitment to the task at hand, describing the negotiations as “the shortest and most peaceful” in recent times.

Speaking after the signing, Walson-Jack added, “All members have reviewed and signed copies of the MoU, which will now be forwarded to the Federal Government for further action.”

On behalf of the Labour Union, National Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council, Comrade Benjamin Anthony, praised the committee for its thorough and timely work, expressing satisfaction with the outcome.

With this agreement, civil servants nationwide are set to benefit from the wage adjustments, bringing much-needed relief amidst the country’s challenging economic situation.
