The Federal Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning Centre (FEW) has issued a flood alert covering 32 locations across 11 states, warning communities could be at risk from September 14 to 18, 2025.

The alert follows rising water levels in the River Gongola, River Benue, and River Niger.

The affected locations include Ganye and Natubi in Adamawa; several areas in Benue such as Abinsi, Agyo, Makurdi, and others; Agima, Rukubi, and Odogbo in Nasarawa; Beli, Serti, and Donga in Taraba; and Umugboma, Umukwata, Abraka, and nearby areas in Delta. Other flagged areas are Rijau in Niger; Ribah in Kebbi; Gwarzo and Karaye in Kano; Jibia in Katsina; Makira in Sokoto; and multiple communities in Zamfara.

Residents near the floodplains of these rivers, particularly in Gongola up to Numan and Benue and Niger up to Lokoja, are urged to evacuate immediately.

The ministry also called on stakeholders and state governments to take necessary precautions and respond promptly to mitigate risks.

This warning comes amid ongoing flood challenges in Nigeria, with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reporting over 231 deaths, hundreds injured, and thousands displaced in flood incidents this year.

Flooding remains one of Nigeria’s most pressing environmental threats, with millions affected in 2024 alone.
