The Federal Government has fulfilled its reward promise to Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament in Côte d’Ivoire.

The National Sports Commission confirmed that the players have received their national honour certificates and housing allocation documents as part of the rewards earlier announced by the government after their historic triumph.

The presentation of the documents took place in Lyon, France, where the African champions are currently participating in the FIBA Women’s World Cup qualifying tournament.

President Bola Tinubu had announced the reward package on August 4, 2025, after hosting the team in Abuja following their record-breaking performance at the continental championship.

Each player was awarded the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger and a cash reward of $100,000, along with the allocation of a flat in Abuja.

Members of the technical crew, led by head coach Rena Wakama, were also rewarded with $50,000 each as part of the recognition for the team’s performance.

D’Tigress secured the AfroBasket title on August 3, 2025, after defeating Mali 78–64 in the final to claim their seventh continental title.

The victory also marked the team’s fifth consecutive AfroBasket triumph, extending Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s basketball and maintaining an impressive winning streak that has remained unbroken since 2015.
