The Federal Government of Nigeria has inaugurated the first-ever barracks for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), marking a significant milestone 35 years after the agency’s establishment.

The commissioning ceremony, held on February 17, 2025, in Kwanan Waya, Yola, was attended by top government officials, including the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi. He described the facility as more than just a physical structure, emphasizing its role in enhancing the welfare and security of NDLEA personnel.

Fagbemi praised the initiative, highlighting the modern administrative offices, detention facilities, secure storage, and residential accommodations designed to provide a conducive environment for officers and their families. He credited former President Muhammadu Buhari for initiating the project and commended President Bola Tinubu for ensuring its completion.

“This facility reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to the welfare and security of NDLEA personnel, ensuring they have the necessary support to carry out their critical duties,” Fagbemi said.

The Chairman and Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), stressed the importance of the barracks in protecting officers who have been vulnerable to attacks while living outside secure government housing.

“Over the years, our officers have faced threats, including tragic losses. The urgency of this project cannot be overstated,” Marwa stated.

The barracks, built on an 18-hectare site, comprises office structures, residential units, and operational facilities, including a modern administrative building for the Adamawa State Command, a detention center, an exhibit room, watchtowers, and pavilions. The residential section includes lodges for commanders and over 260 housing units ranging from one-bedroom terrace flats to three-bedroom semi-detached apartments.

Marwa expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his unwavering support and acknowledged contributions from key stakeholders, including the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, for facilitating the project.

Other dignitaries at the event included Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics, who reiterated the importance of proper motivation for NDLEA personnel, and Abass Adigun, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Narc
