The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed that the arrest of Simon Ekpa, a prominent separatist leader associated with the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), followed sustained diplomatic efforts on Finland.

Ekpa, who identifies as the Prime Minister of the self-proclaimed Biafra Republic Government in Exile, was detained alongside four others on Thursday by Finnish authorities on suspicion of terrorist activities. The District Court of Päijät-Häme in Finland has ruled to keep him in detention on charges of inciting terrorism and promoting violence through social media platforms.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the importance of this arrest in addressing IPOB’s influence and combating its impact on Nigeria’s national security

“The arrest of Mr. Simon Ekpa is a significant development in addressing the activities of IPOB and neutralizing the influence of transnational actors,” said ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) also lauded Finnish authorities, describing the arrest as a breakthrough in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism. The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, expressed hope for Ekpa’s extradition to Nigeria to face justice for his alleged role in inciting violence and fueling terrorism in the South-East.

Background on Simon Ekpa

Ekpa has been accused of using social media to propagate separatist propaganda linked to IPOB and inciting violence in southeastern Nigeria. Finnish authorities have previously investigated him for financial crimes, including fund-raising through questionable methods.

The Nigerian government declared him wanted in March 2024, citing his involvement in activities threatening the nation’s stability. This latest development underscores international cooperation in counterterrorism efforts, a move welcomed by both the Nigerian government and its security agencies.

Further updates on Ekpa’s legal proceedings and potential extradition are awaited.
