The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the temporary closure of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan, Oyo State, to facilitate critical infrastructure upgrades.

In a statement issued on Sunday, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, confirmed that the Federal Government approved the closure to allow for extensive renovations aimed at enhancing operational standards.

As a result, the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has shut down the airport’s runway and suspended all flight operations in line with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations.

According to FAAN, the upgrades are part of the Oyo State Government’s initiative to elevate the airport to international status. The agency appealed for cooperation from stakeholders and passengers during the closure, emphasizing that the decision aligns with aviation safety protocols.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the temporary closure of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, Ibadan, due to ongoing upgrade works,” the statement read. “In compliance with recommended aviation safety standards, the closure is necessary to ensure the security of passengers and airport personnel.”

The airport’s reopening timeline has not yet been disclosed.
