A coalition of timber dealers in Lagos has issued an urgent appeal to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to involve all relevant stakeholders in the decision-making process concerning the rumored eviction of the Okobaba Timber Business. The coalition, representing various key groups in the timber industry, expressed deep concern over the potential impact of such an eviction on their livelihoods and the broader economic implications for the region.

The coalition includes prominent organizations such as the Ifesowapo Timber Contractors Association, Ijaw Timber Contractors Association, Towing Vessels Association of Nigeria, Timber Sawyers Association of Nigeria, and Timber Pullers Association of Nigeria. In a detailed press statement, signed by representatives Mr. Akinte Gabriel, High Chief Cyrus Olopele, Mr. Oshodi Wasiu, Alhaji Taiwo Ahmed Quadri, and Mr. Monday Akuboh, the group highlighted the importance of careful consideration and consultation before any drastic actions are taken.

The timber dealers emphasized that the Okobaba Timber Business is not just a commercial hub but a critical source of livelihood for thousands of workers and their families. They warned that an abrupt eviction could lead to significant economic disruptions, including job losses and the destabilization of the timber supply chain, which is vital to both local and national markets. The coalition noted that many of those involved in the timber industry have been operating for decades, contributing to the economic fabric of Lagos and playing a vital role in the state’s development.

In their appeal, the coalition urged the Lagos State Government to prioritize the proper management of timber operations in the waterways, which they view as essential to sustaining the industry. They called for the implementation of a comprehensive management plan that would address environmental concerns, ensure safety in the waterways, and maintain the efficiency of timber transportation and processing.

The timber dealers also stressed the need for transparency and inclusivity in the decision-making process. They argued that all relevant stakeholders, including local communities, industry professionals, and environmental experts, should be consulted to ensure that any actions taken are fair, sustainable, and beneficial to all parties involved. The coalition believes that such a collaborative approach would help prevent conflicts and ensure that the timber industry continues to thrive in Lagos.

Furthermore, the group warned that neglecting the input of key stakeholders could lead to long-term negative consequences, including the potential displacement of workers and the loss of a significant economic sector. They expressed hope that Governor Sanwo-Olu and the Lagos State Government would take their concerns seriously and work towards a solution that protects both the environment and the livelihoods of those who depend on the timber industry.

As the situation continues to unfold, the coalition remains committed to advocating for the interests of the timber dealers and the broader community. They are calling on the state government to take a measured and inclusive approach to any potential eviction, ensuring that the future of the Okobaba Timber Business and its workers is safeguarded.
